Celebrating carbon savings on National Data Centre Day

Today is the UK’s National Data Centre Day, launched to celebrate our industry’s vital role in supporting the digital world. With some 514 data centres in the UK, we represent around 5% of the global estate. According to the IEA – UK data centre sites currently consume some 26.23GW of power each year.
That’s a huge power draw, and one that’s only going to increase over the next five years as new AI workloads come on stream. Given this, it’s incumbent on data centre operators to do everything they can to benchmark, monitor and optimise data centre power consumption. It’s more important than ever that operations teams work to ensure their thermal performance and cooling stay optimised.
Built right into the heart of our EkkoSoft Critical 3D visualisation and analytics software, Cooling Advisor AI-powered advisory software helps operations teams stay on track. Following the clear recommendations offered by Cooling Advisor’s algorithms results in 10% savings in cooling energy usage. We are proud to celebrate this on National Data Centre Day.
These kind of energy savings have huge potential for our industry. Applied to the UK data centre estate, a 10% saving in cooling energy usage would be equivalent to 780MW of electricity or 84,162 tonnes of CO2e. That’s the same level of annual emissions as a UK town such as Crewe or Morecambe with a 65,000 population. And remember, that’s a 780MW saving each and every year, and this number will only keep on increasing.
So on National Data Centre Day, let’s make sure we all have the right tools in place to deliver on our carbon reduction targets. Data centres already using Cooling Advisor say it’s like having their own in-house optimisation consultant working 24/7 across their entire estate!
