Impact of AI means datacenter energy costs set to become the largest operating expense

datacenter energy costs research from analyst IDC and EkkoSense

EkkoSense co-founder and CEO Dean Boyle shares thoughts on IDC’s newly released datacenter research report Monitoring and Optimizing Datacenter Facilities”.

IDC’s new report “Monitoring and Optimizing AI Datacenter Facilities” authored by its Research Director for Cloud to Edge Datacenter Trends, Sean Graham – has highlighted how the cost of energy is becoming the largest datacenter operating expense.

In the report, Sean Graham writes that ‘with the rapid expansion of GenAI and digital transformation, datacenter energy consumption is projected to rise sharply – increasing both costs and carbon emissions’.

IDC finds that datacenter energy consumption is expected to grow 2.4 times between 2023 and 2028. The report identifies increased data consumption and the growing scarcity of power as key factors that are driving up energy costs.

To help data center operations teams address this important issue, the IDC report sets out a series of recommendations including: Tracking key energy and environmental KPIs, Leveraging AI algorithms to monitor and manage energy consumption, and Understanding your current environment to help establish greater control over your datacenter energy costs.

These are all areas where EkkoSense can deliver quantifiable benefits. Our award-winning AI-powered EkkoSoft Critical 3D visualization and analytics SaaS solution helps operations teams to optimize performance and secure datacenter cooling cost reductions of up to 30%. At the same time, quantifiable carbon savings mean that EkkoSense makes a great partner for datacenters looking to deliver on their corporate ESG goals.

EkkoSoft Critical helps datacenter operations teams resolve this in a light-touch, vendor-agnostic way. Key EkkoSense benefits include identifying cooling, power and capacity inefficiencies, unlocking cooling energy and carbon savings, and freeing capacity for operators to support additional workloads within your existing space. Datacenter energy cost reduction case studies available to read here.
